MASTITIS

MASTITIS is a bacterial infection of the breast tissue and may be caused by blocked milk ducts.
OCCURRENCE:
• most commonly in breastfeeding women
• sometimes in women who are not pregnant or lactating
• rarely in men
SYMPTOMS:
• feeling very unwell, including aching, shivering and chills
• fever
• intense pain and redness of the breast in a localised
area
• affected area is tender and warm to touch
• swelling of the breast
• hardened or lumpy area
• pain while breast-feeding

In addition to antibiotics and good feeding techniques, massage and ultrasound can help unblock the milk ducts.
You need to address this condition as soon as you start to feel unwell and have 2 or more of the other listed symptoms.
Ensure you indicate to our reception staff that you have mastitis as this requires an URGENT appointment.
